Johannesburg - An alleged syndicate issuing fraudulent birth, medical and child grant certificates was discovered in Soweto, Gauteng police said on Sunday.
Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said some ink pads belonging to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, health care centres in Soweto and the departments of education and social services and population development were seized in Dobsonville Ext on Friday.
"Some of these ink pads are for maternity wards, orthopaedics ward, antenatal clinic and discharge stamps at the hospital."
Dlamini said 25 stamped blank medical certificates and one medical certificate were seized. An employee at the Soweto Health Care Centre was arrested for possession of suspected stolen property.
Dlamini said the employee may also face several charges of fraud when he appears in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on Monday. He said more people, including employees of government departments, may be arrested as investigations continue.
