Johannesburg - A robber was shot dead when he broke into a house in Kloof, Durban police said on Sunday.
"... The home owner together with his wife were inside the house watching rugby when an unknown man forced open the dining room glass door and gained entry," said Colonel Jay Naicker. The man was armed with a knife and the home owner ran to his bedroom to fetch his firearm, at around 18:30 on Saturday.
"He confronted the armed suspect who was still inside the house and fired several shots at the man who attacked him." The unidentified robber, aged about 35, died at the house on Kloof Falls Road.
Earlier the robber and an accomplice had broken into a house in Douglas Road, Kloof. The house alarm went off and when the security company responded, they saw the two men driving out of the property in a BMW 1 Series.
"The response vehicle gave chase and the suspects lost control of the vehicle, colliding into another vehicle at the corner of Douglas and Kloof Falls roads," said Naicker. The men abandoned their vehicle and ran away. This was when the one man jumped over the fence into the Kloof Falls Road property where the owner shot him dead.
The BMW had false number plates and had been hijacked on October 11. Police found jewellery in the car. "The police are investigating cases of housebreaking, attempted house robbery and an inquest in respect of the suspect's death."
