Gauteng legislature wastes R20m

Johannesburg - About R20m of taxpayers' money was spent on a legislature information system that is still not fully operational after five years, the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) said on Friday.

"It is on this basis, that in April 2010, the Budget Council commissioned PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) to proceed with the evaluation and audit of the Legislature Information Management System (LIMS)," GPL speaker Lindiwe Maseko told journalists.

Maseko said the outcomes of the evaluation done by PWC pointed to a lack of proper project management.

Various inconsistencies related to governance and compliance were also found. As a result, auditors this month recommended that a forensic audit be carried out.

"This recommendation has been fully embraced by both the accounting and the executive authority of the GPL," Maseko said.

The forensic audit was expected to take place soon, although no date was set.
