Confirmed - cops paid for Cele's house

Cape Town - Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa on Wednesday confirmed that R3.7m was taken from the police budget to pay for a house for national commissioner General Bheki Cele.

The house in Waterkloof, Pretoria, cost R2.989m to buy and transfer. Another R732 000 was spent on renovations, Mthethwa said in reply to a parliamentary question.

He said he did not approve the purchase as this was the responsibility of the department's chief accounting officer, who is Cele himself. Mthethwa added that in terms of police policy "the national commissioner as post incumbent qualifies for the provision of residential accommodation due to the nature of his appointment".

The house, the renovations and lavish interior decoration had generated considerable controversy.
