Over one million tested in KZN

Johannesburg - Over one million people have been tested for HIV in KwaZulu-Natal, Health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo said on World Aids Day on Wednesday.

"The province of KwaZulu-Natal has reached 79% of its HIV Counselling and Testing (HCT) campaign target by pre-counselling 1.5 million people and actually testing 1.1 million of the three million targeted by end of June 2011," said Dhlomo in a statement.

He said the HCT campaign aimed to provide counselling and testing services to 15 million South Africans by the end of June 2011.

Following on from KwaZulu-Natal is Gauteng, with 953 638 people tested and then Limpopo with 691 841 people tested. In the Eastern Cape 642 467 people know their status as a result of the campaign and in the North West 530 637.

The campaign has seen 388 802 people tested in Mpumalanga, 363 747 in the Free State, 333 765 in the Western Cape and 83 133 in the Northern Cape.

"It looks promising that our targets are within reach," said Dhlomo.
