Heavy traffic expected on SA's roads

Johannesburg - The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) was expecting heavy traffic on the country's main arteries including the N3 between Johannesburg and Pretoria and the N4 between Pretoria and Nelspruit on Friday. "We are expecting a sizeable group of people who will be travelling on all our major arterial routes, mainly the N3, which is the busiest road in the country and in Africa," RTMC spokesperson Ashraf Ismail said. Other major roads including the N4 between Pretoria and Rustenburg, the N1 between Pretoria and Limpopo and the N1 between Johannesburg and Cape Town via Bloemfontein were also expected to be busy between Friday and Sunday. "Already our road fatalities are nearing 900, we urge people to reduce their speed, especially in inclement weather," said Ismail. The RTMC said it had adopted a no-nonsense attitudes towards motorists who drive cars with worn out tyres as they were a major cause of accidents. "We will not give fines to people who drive cars with worn out tyres, we will remove them from the roads." He also appealed to motorists to follow traffic rules as "we did during the World Cup". "As government we can roll out different programmes to stop fatalities on our roads, but the responsibility lies in the hands of the users, motorists, passengers and pedestrians."
