7 drunks a day on Eastern Cape roads

Port Elizabeth - Eastern Cape traffic officials have arrested an average of seven drunk drivers a day on the province's roads this month, the provincial transport department said on Tuesday.

It said officials had stopped and screened 61,136 vehicles since the December 1 start of the Festive Season Arrive Alive Campaign.

A total of 18 109 fines had been issued, 589 vehicles impounded (including 36 buses and 219 minibuses) and 740 people arrested.

The arrests included 140 for drunken driving, 44 for overloading and 29 for speeding.
