Durban - The African National Congress was outraged after witnessing acts of political intolerance by the Inkatha Freedom Party in Ulundi, the party said on Monday. "The councillor of ward eight in eMahlabathini tried to disrupt the community meeting called by the ANC leadership in the area.
"The IFP councillor stormed the community meeting accompanied by iNduna and tried to disrupt the meeting by intimidating ANC members and demanded that they must leave the meeting," the ANC said in a statement. The people who were attending the meeting refused to disperse.
"The IFP must stop intimidating people and understand that people need development. The people presented challenges of lack of roads, houses, water shortage and electricity." In another incident on Thursday last week ANC members were summoned to a traditional court accused of conducting an illegal gathering, after holding an ANC meeting in ward nine in eNkonjeni.
"As the ANC we want to make it clear that nothing will stop us from mobilising in these areas and no amount of intimidation will stop people from joining the ANC." KwaZulu-Natal IFP chairperson Mntomuhle Khawula said the IFP was unaware of the incident and had not been informed of it by the ANC.
"If such an incident did occur we have no knowledge of it. They should inform us and we will launch an investigation and take the matter forward," said Khawula.
