Cape Town – The 26-year-old Khayelitsha man accused in the murder of Anni Dewani, 28, provided police with information on Wednesday afternoon.
A reliable source told Die Burger he also made a confession. However, the confession might be problematic because it was made in front of a police officer and not a magistrate.
Dewani and her husband Shrien, 31, from Bristol, England, were abducted in Gugulethu on Saturday night.
He was later dropped off and her body was found on the back seat of their rented VW Sharan in Khayelitsha the next morning.
It was the second day of their honeymoon.
The source also said Shrien Dewani left the country on Tuesday at 21:00.
Puzzling
He added that there are some questions surrounding Shrien which are puzzling the police. "There was not a single scratch or scrape on his body."
The man from Khayelitsha, presumably the driver of the car, will appear in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court on Thursday on charges of hijacking and murder.
The accused – whose identity is known to Die Burger – was taken in for questioning by police on Tuesday morning and arrested on Wednesday afternoon.
He is being detained in the Bellville police station.
Post mortem
Staff at the Cape Grace hotel, who asked not to be named, confirmed that Anni's father and Shrien checked out on Tuesday afternoon.
Meanwhile Captain Frederick van Wyk, provincial police spokesperson, said the police are looking for another suspect in connection with the hijacking and the murder.
On Wednesday a man at the flat in Brackenfell where the Sharan is registered said he has never heard of the accused. According to him he definitely also doesn't own a Volkswagen Sharan.
Van Wyk on Wednesday said Dewani's body was handed over to her family on Tuesday after a post-mortem.
He said the result of the post-mortem will only be announced in court.
