No one was injured, said spokesperson Mamnkeli Ngam.
"Currently Prasa rail and Transnet freight rail teams are on site doing the necessary investigations to determine the cause of the derailment.
"Both railway lines are impassable, which affects incoming and outgoing passenger services including Shosholoza Meyl," he said.
Passenger services had been suspended until further notice, and Prasa could not say how long it would take for train services to return to normal.
Ngam advised commuters to make alternative transport arrangements.
