Sanlam SA Fashion Week Student Competition

8 October 2010

DUT is proud to announce that six Fashion and Textile students from DUT have been listed in the top 11 finalist of the 2010 Sanlam SA Fashion Week Student Competition.

The competition themed 'Fashion to Art' focuses on redefining fashion through the use of grey recycled clothing by converting a fusion of items into an avant-garde luxury item. The competition was open to all local and national design schools and tertiary institutions. Winners will be announced at the fashion show at Sandton City, Fountain Court on Sunday, 10 October 2010 at 1pm.

The top five garments will be used in the promotion of Sanlam SA Fashion Week and all garments will be on display at the Pop-up Shop, bringing together cutting edge style and uncompromising elegance, at the fashion extravaganza from 8-10 October 2010.

George Vorster, Fashion and Textile HOD said the competition is a great opportunity for students to showcase their abilities and consolidate all prior learning that had taken place. The brief required the use of recycled garments in tones of grey and household products with the use of different techniques, including embroidery, crochet and the process of dying fabric. The bold designs are internationally influenced and in keeping with efforts to recycle and save our world.

Vorster said: "We are delighted with the results, and extremely proud of the student's achievements. During the prejudging stage, the designs of six DUT students were selected by judges to compete in the challenge between the top 11 finalists. Last year the competition was won by DUT student, Julia Cornje."

"We are pleased with our student's performance and eagerly await the announcement of this year's winner. The group has enjoyed the competition tremendously, displaying exceptional skills in combining and integrating different techniques which they learnt in their first and second year of study. The product of their commitment and dedication are garments which reflect their diversity, individuality, personal style and character. Their performance in the competition is a reflection of the high quality of work produced and the caliber of students enrolled at the department," he said.
