SA needs common identity - Mbeki

Johannesburg - Former president Thabo Mbeki challenged South Africans on Saturday to discuss a "common identity" for the country, the SABC reported.

He warned that divisions surrounding language, ethnicity and race were a stumbling block in attaining unity and cohesion.

Addressing the Royal Bafokeng palace in Rustenburg, Mbeki said a common identity was needed, irrespective of race, gender, age or creed.

SA should take pride that it is the cradle of mankind and has contributed to global civilisation, he said.
