Police arrest 62 students after protest rampage

Police arrested 62 students at the Durban University of Technology on charges of public violence on Tuesday.Protestors there started demonstrating for better bus services and on-campus food last week.

They went on the rampage on Tuesday afternoon, damaging university property and lecturers’ cars before pelting police officers with stones.

The police’s Vincent Mdunge said one officer was injured and paramedics attended to a student who was shot in the face with a rubber bullet.


“It was a total rampage. Property was damaged, police officers were attacked and stoned [and] police vehicles were damaged. They will appear in the
 Durban court on Wednesday morning,“ he said.
