Mission Statement Student Housing, as a component of the Student Services Division, is in support of the division’s philosophy of being concerned with the overall welfare, development and educational success of our students. In doing so, Student Housing undertakes to provide accessible, affordable accommodation conducive to learning in a safe and healthy environment, whilst providing opportunities for residence student empowerment and advancement. Our interests and concerns are to ensure that the personal, social and academic development of students is achieved through participation in proactive programmes which address current issues and problems, as well as assisting in the individual’s adjustment to the community at large. We shall do this by taking an active interest in the academic progress of students in residence and providing the necessary support or proper referrals on serious issues affecting students. We shall encourage community involvement and participation in the empowerment and advancement of a residence student at the Durban University of Technology. Residences The Durban University of Technology owns nine residences which are located around the Steve Biko campus and in central Durban. Alpine Road is situated at Overport approximately 8 km from the main campus and within walking distance of Brickfield Road Campus. It has a total capacity of 231 students both male and female in single sleepers. It has a capacity of 286 students in the following room profiles: 2-sleeper, 3-sleeper and 4-sleeper sharing rooms. It has a total capacity of 315 students with single and double sleepers. It accommodates 148 male and female students. This is a self-catering residence and has a capacity of 93 male and female, final year and post diploma/graduate students. The total capacity of the residence is 162 students both male and female. It has 2-sleeper and 4-sleeper accommodation. This is a self-catering residence and is only available to final year and post diploma/graduate students. Address: 31 Currie Road, Durban 4001 Telephone: 031 201 8549 How to apply for residence Returning Students All returning residence students and currently registered students are able to apply using the online system at the University computer labs for the following year. Students who are doing in-service or are returning to the University should apply by either phoning the department or by emailing your postal address to have an application form sent to you. New applicants First time applicants should request an application form from the Student Housing Office by either phoning the department or emailing your postal address. The completed application form is to be returned together with the application fee to the Student Housing department. Residence Admissions The Institution recognises that it is important to provide residential accommodation for students, especially for new first year students, to allow them to make the necessary adjustments to cope with the academic challenges that lie ahead and their journey into adulthood. An undergraduate student shall therefore be admitted in the residences for a period of no longer than four continuous years. The catering residence shall be allocated on a ration of seventy five percent (75%) new first year students and twenty five percent (25%) returning students. This is in line with the philosophy of providing residential accommodation at higher education. That is, every assistance must be given to allow new first year students to make the necessary adjustment from the life of being at home with parental guidance, to a life of academic demands and independence. The self-catering residences shall be primarily for senior students who, it is believed, have made the necessary adjustments, and thus have to begin to be independent in terms of planning for their academic activities, viz-a-viz their social life. New first year or returning students will be eligible for admission or re-admission to all DUT residences, subject to the following conditions: - Payment is made upon registration or on production of DUT approved letter of authority, from a sponsor, a bank loan approval, Financial Aid recipients, or other arrangements made through the Office of Student Housing.
- Satisfactory academic progress by achieving a fifty percent (50%) overall pass rate of the subject/courses/modules registered for in the previous year or semester.
- Satisfactory conduct accepted personal behavior and a good disciplinary record.
- Accommodation shall be for the sole use of the allocated student in each semester.
- Should a students academic registration lapse or be cancelled at any time during the semester, all rights to accommodation will be terminated immediately and the student will be liable for full residence fees for that period.
- Any student whose guests are disruptive, break the residence rule, or cause damages, may result in exclusion of the student concerned.
- First preference shall be given to applicant students outside the Durban Metropolitan area and other applications will be considered on their merits.
