Arts and Design students are living up to our university slogan by making their knowledge useful to the 2010 World Cup. Innovation and industry are our key words so students and staff are working to support Bafana from behind the TV cameras, by doing the diski dance, showcasing brilliant new soccer fashion styles and by empowering street children at their own soccer world championship.

Visual Communication Design’s Workspace is proud to have been the design team to the inaugural Deloitte Street Child World Championship (SCWC) which took place at the DUT in March, a project which resonated with the Workspace ethos of affording opportunities to the youth and empowering them.

The DUT Gallery is hosting a special show, scheduled to coincide with the soccer tournament. “Coordinates” is an exhibition by photography students. Coordinates, Longitude 29˚49´46’’S & Latitude 31˚01’49’’E, mark the geographical location of the Moses Mabhida stadium referenced from Google earth. The large format photographs in the map-like installation show how the stadium has transformed the landscape of the city through its most visible feature, the arch.

Second-year Fashion Designer Charmian Booyens, is a finalist in the national Football Fridays Competition, and Prof Peter Burnett and Video Technology Lecturer, Louis de Waal are working on the television broadcast of the World Cup as camera engineers. It’s a massive broadcast, which traditionally attracts the highest television viewership of any programme broadcast worldwide. Various venues will feature DUT Drama students doing the diski, and Senzo Shange, Btech : Translation & Interpreting Practice student, an intern with KZN Arts, Culture and Tourism, will be hosting visitors to the Moses Mabhida Stadium at all the matches. We’re supporting Bafana, with DUT’s creative arts and design.
